The Poincare Conjecture is 100 years old. Recently a proof has been proposed by G. Perelman. The aim of this introductory talk is to trace back the history of this conjecture and give a sketch of Perelmans strategy. This talk was presented by the speaker in the Institute Henri Poincare for the 150 years birth of Henri Poincare in the last December.
