After 2003, the study of finite $p$-groups has been much more active than before. In this talk, we give a short description of the history of p-group theory, introduce three classes of importantp-groups --- regular, powerful and that of maximal class. Finally, we give an exposition of the speaker\'s recentwork and propose some problems.
