Nearly 2500 years ago, Hippocrates called for the careful recording and sharing of evidence about patients and their illnesses. While this charge sits at the foundation of modern medicine, large quantities of relevant healthcare data still goes unrecorded and unused. I will present on opportunities to collect and learn from large amounts of data about patients and their encounters with healthcare providers. I will frame discussion with a focus on two challenging problems in clinical care: the readmission of patients after their discharge from hospitals and the onset of hospital-associated infections. I will present methods and results on coupling predictions with decision models to guide actions, considering the cost and efficacy of interventions. The methods harness algorithms for learning, prediction, and decision making, and infrastructure for the capture and sharing data. I will end with reflections about the real-world fielding of predictive models that provide guidance in stream with patient care, and discuss several intriguing opportunities ahead.
About the speaker
（报告人介绍）：Eric Horvitz is Distinguished Scientist and Managing Director at Microsoft Research. He has pursued research on machine learning and statistics, decision analysis, and machine intelligence. His efforts span theory and practice and have led to the fielding of applications and services in healthcare, information retrieval, human-computer interaction, e-commerce, and aerospace. Dr. Horvitz received his PhD and MD degrees at Stanford University. He has been elected Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He has served as president of AAAI, the chair of the AAAS Section on Information, Computing, and Communication, and on the advisory board of the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate.
