In the first part of this talk, I'll describe a program for computing the index of an ellptic (hence Fredholm) symmetrically global (SG) pseudo-differential operator on $\Rn$. This is work in progress and more effort is needed to complete the index program. The second part is devoted to a proof of the spectral invariance problem for SG pseudo-differential operators, i.e., if A is an invertible SG pseudo-differential operator, then the inverse of A is also a SG pseudo-differential operator.
