A virtual property of a 3-manifold is a property that holds for a finite cover of it. Such properties are closely related to the the fundamental group of the 3-manifold. During the past decade, many conjectured virtual properties have been confirmed, including the Virtual Haken Conjecture and the Virtual Fibering Conjecture. In this talk, I will briefly survey this topic and review related new techniques in 3-manifold topology.
