We will overview the status of the classification problem of uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems and then discuss partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. Partial hyperbolicity plays an important role in smooth dynamics due to its ties to stable ergodicity and robust transitivity. We will present a new technique of “twisting Anosov flows” which leads to abundance of mapping classes with partially hyperbolic representatives in dimension 3. This is joint work with Ch. Bonatti, A. Hammerlindl and R. Potrie.
