The availability of big data has created both opportunities and challenges for statistical research. In order to capture these opportunities, the future of statistics should embrace computational thinking, nonconventional data analysis methods, and new problems in scientific and industrial applications. During the past decade, the modern internet industry has become the driving force of innovations in developing technologies for big data, with successful commercial applications. I will discuss experience and work done at Baidu's Big Data Lab, including my own research on big data statistical machine learning.
