We first give a rapid recall of the basics up to ellipticity of global pseudo-differential operators on $\Rn$ first studied by Kohn, Nirenberg and H\"ormander, among others. Fredholm operators on Banach spaces are then introduced. The aim is to sketch a proof of the fact that if a pseudo-differential is Fredholm in $L^p(\Rn)$ for some $p\in (1,\infty),$ then it must be elliptic. That the converse is not true is also shown.
