\nIt turns out many properties of spherically symmetric spacetimes can be recovered under the weaker assumptions of warped product splitting. We discuss some of these consequences focussing on the proof of a generalized Birkhoff\'s theorem. This talk is based on joint work with An Xinliang (U. Toronto).<\/span>
