Abstract: Over the last decades, the planar Gaussian free field has been conjectured, and in some cases proved, to arise as a universal scaling limit from a broad range of statistical physics models. I will discuss a recent work with Nathanael Berestycki and Gourab Ray, showing that any random distribution satisfying conformal invariance and a certain domain Markov property must be a multiple of the Gaussian free field. This result holds subject only to a fourth moment assumption on the field.
