Two recent directions in the theory of algebraic cycles will be discussed.
1. Using the work of Thomason in K-theory it is possible to prove an \"infinitesimal Hodge conjecture\" for algebraic cycles.
2. Periods of algebraic cycles are related to Feynman amplitudes in physics.
Every effort will be made to keep the exposition elementary and accessible to all.
