In this talk, I will introduce a theory of nonlinear systems of time-dependent first-order partial differential equations and present some of its mathematical consequences. This theory has applications in many different fields ranging from kinetic theory to geophysics and from probability theory to complex fluids. It guided us to establish the convergence of the lattice Botzmann method and justify the validity of the classical partial equilibrium approximation in chemical kinetics. It also suggests a strong dissipation property of the master equations. Moreover, I will show a new formalism of irreversible thermodynamics based on this theory and the core of the theory can be regarded as stability criteria for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.
