Topology provides a solution to the fragility problem of qubits. This inherently fault-tolerant approach to quantum computing is called topological quantum computation (TQC). In this approach, information is encoded in topological Hilbert spaces and processed by the braiding of anyons, which are quasi-particles with statistics more general than bosons and fermions. The hypothetical chips would be topological phases of matter such as the Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids, topological insulators, and their man-made siblings. I will give an elementary introduction to this approach and explain the theoretical underpins of TQC.
