Dominant mathematical theories of human cognition do not describe well the empirical findings about how the brain and the mind work. In this talk, I will explore the issue of "unreasonable ineffectiveness of mathematics in cognitive science" and discuss the need/possibility/challenge for a new type of mathematics of cognition that is normative, descriptive and biologically realistic. A neural network model that learns to capture rich statistical structures in the environment and then explains the gambler's fallacy is introduced to demonstrate the point. 报告人简介: Dr. Hongbin Wang received a BS degree in psychology from Peking University in 1991. In 1998 he received a MS degree in computer and information sciences and a PhD degree in psychology, both from the Ohio State University. Dr. Wang is currently a professor and co-director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics, Texas A&M Health Science Center. Before that, he was a professor (2000-2013) and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (2011-2013) at the University of Texas School of Biomedical Informatics at Houston. His recent interests include cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience, and human and machine intelligence.
