In this talk, I will discuss numerical solution of partial differential equations through integrated studies of structure-preserving discretization, grid adaptation, algebraic solution and parallel computation. Using models such as complex fluids, magnetohydrodynamics, Einstein equations and high order PDEs, I will demonstrate the importance of using mathematical tools and the power of abstraction in developing and analyzing efficient numerical algorithms. I will also discuss the challenges and opportunities in collaborating with practitioners in solving industrial and other real-life problems. Most results to be reported are joint-works with colleagues and students from Peking University.
