The equivariant form of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture asserts that the multiplicity with which an Artin representation $\varrho:Gal(H/\Q)\rightarrow GL_n({\bf C})$ occurs in the Mordell-Weil group $E(H)\otimes {\bf C}$ is equal to the order of vanishing of an associated Artin-Hasse-Weil $L$-series at the center. Some recent progress on this question, based on the notion of ``generalised Kato classes", will be reviewed. This is based on joint work with Massimo Bertolini and Victor Rotger.
