The theory of dynamical systems tries to describe complicated (or chaotic) behaviour that appears from what often looks like quite innocent differential equations or from the iteration of a simple map from some space to itself. When the behaviour becomes too complex, it is sometimes wiser to describe the dynamics using statistical methods.
In this colloquium we present a fascinating example whose dynamics is so complicated that even the statistical description is too unpredictable to be of any practical use.
The exposition is aimed for a wide audience. No previous knowledge of
dynamical systems is required.
