The existence of canonical metrics on Kahler manifolds is a fundamental problem in complex geometry. In this talk, we will discuss a variational approach to Calabi's extremal metrics on toric manifolds. In particular, on toric surfaces, we obtain the existence, uniqueness and interior regularity of weak minimizers of Donaldson's version of K-energy associated to extremal metrics.
