The abelian sandpile model was invented by Physicist Dhar [Dhar 1990] as a test-bed for the concept of self-organized criticality(SOC)introduced in [BTW 1987]. Since its appearance, it attracted much more attention than other SOC models because of its good mathematical structure.Here we will review some mathematical problems of the abelian sandpile models, especially the height distribution functions and the sandpile group.
