Lienard equations come from second order scalar differential equations. Polynomial Lienard equations show up in a natural way in different domains. They might also be the simplest equations presenting nice theoretical challenges. Methods that are initially conceived in the study of polynomial Lienard equations can often easily been transferred to more general systems in the plane or even on surfaces. A very serious problem concerns the study of the limit cycles (the isolated periodic solutions). Smale\'s 13th problem (a specification of Hilbert\'s 16th problem) asks for the number of limit cycles of classical Lienard equations. In this talk we will present a survey of recent results about limit cycles of polynomial Lienard equations
