Local theory of finite groups, which has been the key tool in the process of classifying finite simple groups, really finds its origins in the work of Frobenius and Brauer. We shall explain its problematic and how it was used in the classification theorem ; then we shall show the limit of the classical approach, and how it naturally leads to local representation theory of finite groups and some of the contemporary main conjectures expressed in terms of derived categories.
