Measurement can be thought of as a process that extracts information about, or (conditionally) entropy from, a system. Extracting information about a particular observable can be called “read-out”. Extracting entropy is “purification”, which can be changed to “cooling” by applying reversible controls. All measurement processes take time, and can be characterized by some rate γ. That is, the rate of read-out and measurement-based cooling is constrained by γ. In this talk I will consider the goal of increasing the rate of read-out and/or cooling using control. The key assumptions are that γ is much smaller than the control bandwidth, and that measurement supplies the only irreversibility (i.e. we restrict to Hamiltonian control).
