An anisotropic surface energy is one which is dependendent on the direction of the surface at each point of the surface. Such functionals are used to model the interface between materials when at least one of them is in an ordered phase (e.g. crystal or liquid crystal). We will discuss the determination of stable equilibria for free boundary problems for this type of energy functional.
