Cortical activity in the primary visual cortex (V1) possesses striking properties and structures which depend upon both (i) the cortical “operating point” and (ii) visual stimulation. In this talk, we will describe these properties and structures for two distinct cortical states in anaesthetized cat – spontaneous cortical activity and the cortical activity in response to the visual stimulus of the line motion illusion. In both cases, a detailed large scale computational model of the layer 4 of V1 will be used to identify within the model those neuronal mechanisms responsible for these distinct cortical states, and thus potentially responsible for the states within the cat cortex.
