The small populations of certain species in cells lead great concern of the stochastic
effect in the cellular dynamics. In order to study these stochastic effects, stochastic models and simulation algorithms have been developed. Gillespie algorithm, also called SSA, is one of the most important simulation method among them. However, it is also known for its low efficiency when the system becomes larger and more complex, for example, the cell cycle model. In order to improve its efficiency, certain multiscale features in complex biological models have been studied and utilized to develop more efficient algorithms. Usually two multiscale features are of our concern: the one related to populations of species and the one related to different reaction rates. Often these two features are coupled together so that many existing algorithms do not work. In this talk we will discuss the literature on this problem and discuss our proposed solution for it. The lecture will be more intuitive rather than theoretical. All interested faculty members and students are welcome.
