Small area estimation has been widely used in survey sampling data analysis due to grown demand for acurate statistics for small areas and regions from both public and private sectors. In this talk, we will talk about small area estimation models including both the area and unit level models, as well as the inference methods including the EBLUP and HB methods. Some other issues such as sampling variance modeling and smoothing will also be addressed. Then we will talk about some useful applications of small area estimation for important surveys at Statistics Canada including the LFS survey, the PALS survey and the CCHS survey.
