The exponential growth of computer power constantly pushes forward the frontiers of scientific research. In this talk, I will discuss recent progress on particle simulations of the turbulence in fusion plasmas using newly available petascale supercomputers. Turbulent transport is arguably the most important scientific challenges in burning plasma experiments ITER, the crucial next step in the quest for fusion energy. New insights on the transport of electrons and energetic particles in burning plasmas through large scale simulations will be highlighted. Physics models and computational methods that enable the petascale simulations will be discussed.
The talk will be based on the following three papers.
Turbulent transport of trapped electron modes in collisionless plasmas, Yong Xiao and Zhihong Lin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 085004 (2009).
Transport of Energetic Particles by Microturbulence in Magnetized Plasmas, Wenlu Zhang, Zhihong Lin, and Liu Chen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 095001 (2008).
Wave-particle decorrelation and transport of anisotropic turbulence in collisionless plasmas, Z. Lin, I. Holod, L. Chen, P. H. Diamond, T. S. Hahm, and S. Ethier, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 265003 (2007).
