As computers become more powerful for numerical simulations in terms of processing speed and memory capacity, the demand for numerical algorithms and software that are capable of handling very fine mesh, long time integration, and coupled multi-physics is increasing. Explicit and semi-implicit methods often have certain constrains on mesh and time step sizes. In this talk, we focus on fully implicit methods for fluid flow applications including blood flows in human arteries and global atmospheric flows on the surface of the earth. Despite the fact that an implicit method is, sometimes, less accurate than explicit methods, we show that it offers reasonably good solutions for many problems and takes much less computing time. We discuss some domain decomposition based linear and nonlinear iterative solvers and present numerical simulations obtained on supercomputers with thousands of processors.
