The dynamics of complex systems is often driven by multiscale, rare but important events. In this talk, we will discuss two distinct transition state problems in materials science and system biology: First, we focus on the nucleation during phase transition in solids and predict the morphologies of critical nuclei by combining the phase field model with efficient numerical methods. Then we present a multiscale stochastic model to investigate a novel noise attenuation mechanism that relies on more noises in different cellular processes to coordinate cellular decisions during embryonic development.
