Abstract: The talk will begin with an introduction to applications
of geometric analysis to general relativity. I will then summarize
the geometric structures used to capture the notion of a black
hole. Finally, the classical formulas due to Gauss and Codazzi
will be used in conjunction with Einstein\'s equations to arrive at
a monotonicity relation. Physically, this formula relates the
growth of the horizon area of a black hole to the matter and
gravitational energy falling in it. This is another illustration
of the astonishingly rich and detailed interplay between physics
and geometry brought to forefront by general relativity.
