I will discuss quadratic estimates for operators of the form DB where
D is a first order system and B is a multiplication operator. The
mathematics is an extension of ideas that have evolved in
consideration of Calderón’s question on the boundedness of Cauchy
integrals on Lipschitz curves, and Kato’s question on square roots of
elliptic operators. The applications include not only these theorems,
but also results on the perturbation of Hodge-Dirac operators on
Riemannian manifolds, and on the solvability of elliptic boundary
value problems with square integrable boundary data. The latest work
is joint with Andreas Axelsson and Pascal Auscher.
