Abstract: Much information about a discrete group can be gleaned from its action on a δ-hyperbolic space. This has been understood classically for hyperbolic groups by the work of Gromov in the 80s. More recently, it has been discovered that many groups of interest admit useful actions on hyperbolic spaces. In the talk I will outline a construction of such actions and survey some applications, with an emphasis on mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups.
