Abstract: Classical invariant theory is a major achievement of the finite dimensional representation
theory classical groups. The theory of local theta correspondence, which is initiated by Roger Howe
in 1970's, is a profound generalization of the classical invariant theory to the setting of infinite-
dimensional representations. After introducing some basic examples of classical invariant theory
and local theta correspondences, I will explain three basic theorems of the theory, namely, the duality
theorem, the multiplicity preservation theorem, and the conservation relations.
