School Colloquium——The onset of diffusion in the kicked harper model

Abstract: I will talk about a joint work with T. Jaeger and F. A. Tal, where we study the two-parameter family
of analytic toral diffeomorphisms known as the ``kicked Harper Family''. It can be seen as a version of the
standard Chirikov-Taylor family which is non-linear in both directions. In this work, we take the first steps
towards understanding the set of parameters in which the rotation set of the map is ``big'' (nonempty
interior), and in particular the transition between small and big rotation sets, which happens to be a surprisingly complicated set of parameters.
